Cold process soap: why is it different from traditional soap?

We use it every day, often without really wondering how it's made.

Yet, between a classic soap and a cold-processed soap, the difference isn't just about its shape or fragrance. It's mainly about its manufacturing method, its formula, and the feeling it leaves on the skin.

At Cocooning, soap has been part of our story since 2007. So, naturally, we wanted to explain what's behind this method we love so much.

But what exactly is cold-processed soap?

It all starts with vegetable oils and butters, to which an alkaline solution is added. Together, they trigger a reaction called saponification: the fatty substances gradually transform into soap and glycerin.

In cold processing, the oils are not subjected to prolonged high-temperature heating. The mixture is carefully prepared, then poured into molds where the transformation continues.

Once unmolded and cut, the soaps are not yet ready for your bathroom.

They need to wait.

For at least four weeks, they dry slowly. This period, called curing, allows some of the water contained in the soap to gradually evaporate. The soap then becomes harder and melts less quickly on contact with water.

It's a method that takes time. And with cold-processed soap, time is truly part of the recipe.

Glycerin naturally remains in the soap

This is one of the interesting features of this method.

Saponification naturally produces glycerin, a humectant ingredient that helps retain water on the skin's surface.

In cold-processed soap, this glycerin naturally remains present in the finished product.

In addition, there's superfatting.

During formulation, a portion of the oils is intentionally left unsaponified. These oils therefore remain present in the soap and help make its use gentler on the skin.

It is this combination of naturally formed glycerin, superfatting, and the choice of vegetable oils and butters that gives cold-processed soap its unique character.

And in the shower, is it really different?

This is often where the difference is most easily noticed.

Cold-processed soap can produce a creamier lather, sometimes less spectacular than a cleansing product formulated to foam abundantly.

But a lot of foam doesn't necessarily mean better cleaning.

What we're mainly looking for is effective cleansing while avoiding that feeling of overly stripped skin after rinsing.

And not all cold-processed soaps are the same. Quality depends heavily on the formula: the chosen oils and butters, their proportions, the superfatting level, and the added ingredients.

This is where the formulator's expertise really comes into play.

At Cocooning, we have been working with our own formula, refined over the years, since 2007. Some soaps then incorporate ingredients that give them their personality.

Our Honey Moon Natural Soap, for example, is enriched with honey.

Our Goat Milk Soap contains fresh Gruyère milk and has a formula designed to bring even more softness to dry skin.

And with the Wellness Soap, soap also becomes a small sensory moment thanks to its synergy of essential oils with fresh and invigorating notes.

A simple soap… with a lot of know-how behind it

At first glance, soap seems to be one of the simplest products in the bathroom.

In reality, creating a beautiful formula requires a lot of precision.

Finding the right balance between the soap's hardness, lather, softness, and duration of use requires carefully working out the proportions of different oils and butters.

At Cocooning, we have been making our soaps in Switzerland since 2007, in small batches, with carefully selected ingredients and 100% natural fragrances.

Each soap then has its own little personality: a scent, a color, a texture, and sometimes slight variations from one batch to another.

That's also what makes it charming.

The small gesture that changes everything

One last tip if you're adopting solid soap: let it dry thoroughly between uses.

An openwork soap dish, like a grid, that allows water to drain and air to circulate will make a real difference.

Your soap will remain firmer, melt less quickly… and you'll enjoy it for much longer.

Ultimately, behind this small rectangle placed on the edge of the sink or shower lies a manufacturing process that requires time, precision, and a lot of know-how.

And perhaps that's why, after almost twenty years, we still love making our soaps so much. Imagining new scents, playing with colors, ingredients, and textures… this is also where our creativity can fully express itself.
